The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Meeting Recap of Thursday, June 6, 2024
Three guests were with us today. Eileen Conlon was invited by Connie. Laurie Martin was invited by Alice. Mitchell Brown, today’s speaker, was invited by Steve.

For the message of hope, Alice shared words once uttered by Eleanor Roosevelt, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Brenda reflected on her recent travels to Africa on behalf of Rotary International president Gordon McInally for her message of gratitude. “Each day is an opportunity to be grateful for the little things and I believe together, as Rotarians, we each make the world a kinder, brighter place with our everyday actions.”

For the Four-Way Test, I offered the example of Rob Hale, a Boston philanthropist, the commencement speaker at UMass-Dartmouth. He handed every graduate $1,000 as they crossed the stage — $500 to keep for themselves, and $500 to give to any good cause. Is it beneficial to all concerned? Without doubt.

Matt Buttrick was able to break away from his heavy work schedule to resume his customary role as sergeant at arms.  As he made the rounds with the happy dollar basket, we learned that… Tracy’s mom’s health has improved… Alice expressed Happy Pride wishes… Brenda recalled highlights of the Rotary International Convention in Singapore… Eileen Conlon was happy to be with us… Steve was fined as the representative of an all-male table… Elizabeth Ford expressed thanks for Ogunquit’s Memorial Day celebration… Susan was happy that Matt was with us… I shared the news that Cathy Wilson, George’s wife, is recuperating well from a leg fracture… Richard’s daughter Jan Kearns and her husband will visit from South Dakota… Dr. Joe honored the memory of his late brother-in-law, a veteran of WWII… and, on a different note, Dr. Joe nearly made an unnecessary trip to Fort Kent!... Rick said it is good to be back… Ray was happy to meet Mitchell Brown in person… Heidi is happy becoming a member… Elizabeth Cutler appreciated the flag-raisng on Memorial Day… Tyler and siblings are acquiring a beach house… Matt’s son has his learner’s permit!... Matt reported that the surviving family of Larry Carlson are doing well… and, finally, Pete reported $1101.38 in CLYNK,

“CLYNK, CLANK, CLUNK that’s the way it goes!
Every time you fill up a bag,
Don’t stop now, keep filling ‘em up,
So it grows and grows and grows!”

In the 50/50, Pete drew the 10 of spades and the queen of hearts. No cigar!

Brenda offered to beach wine tumblers for the Foundation auction. Tyler prevailed with a bid of $30.

Alice and Elizabeth Cutler presented Heidi Becker with her new member packet. Congratulations Heidi!

Mitchell Brown, Maine Public’s capital campaign manager, shared news of several developments at Maine Public including seven new broadcast towers for Maine Public Radio and Maine Public Classical, expanding coverage northward and down east. With a focus on fairness in broadcasting, Maine Public News Connect broadcasts in four languages – French, Spanish, Somali and Portuguese. Because climate change is such an important topic, Maine Public now has a dedicated climate desk.
