The Rotary Club of
Ogunquit

Recap of Thursday, October 3, 2024
Tyler was the greeter, Dr. Joe provided an inspiring thought for the message of gratitude, and Pete led us in the Four-Way test. You betcha!

Heidi, was acting treasurer as Erin is on holiday in Italy.  Dr. Joe’s grandson Noah will visit to provide some muscle for Fall cleanup. Jonathan West, today’s speaker, is happy that his daughter at Clemson got a B in geography. Susan was very pleased with her visit to Dr. Nii Lokko. Someone (I can’t identify whose voice it is on my recording!) had a happy time in Las Vegas. Brenda is happy to be leaving on another cruise. Ed Smith, who served on the USS Forrestal, shared some US Navy history with Pete, who served on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt, and the rest of us about both ships serving near the Azores at the time of the Suez Canal crisis in 1956. I admired Elizabeth Cutler’s Ogunquit Rotary news piece about the  in the District Newsletter. Eileen thanked Jonathan for the ceviche app that he and Luigi prepared. She saw the video of the preparation on Facebook! She very much enjoyed My Best Friend’s Wedding. Pete thanked Ed Smith for the Navy memories. Both and Sheryl will leave soon for Florida. He is very happy with this year’s flowers in Rotary Park. Regarding CLYNK, Pete said,

“As they loaded more green bags in the CLYNK Van
A CLYNK Bottle was saying to a CLYNK Can.
‘It’s all for a good cause that I fetched ya!’
Then both of them shouted, ‘You betcha!’” ($1222.73)

Rick drew two non-winning cards. Better luck next time.

Eric said the PB&J drive was successful. The Ogunquit Rotary Food Drive ends soon.

Susan introduced Jonathan who initially talked about Ogunquit Rotary in the early 1970s. The club used to serve meals on wheels over a 43 milt=e route that took an hour and a half. He moved on to talk about and show a video he produced about a remarkable Rotary project he initiated to aid refugees of the Rwandan genocide.  Feeling a need to do something in response to that horrific tragedy, Jonathan faxed a letter to the Tanzania District 9210 Governor asking how Rotary could respond. The reply stated a need for blankets, second-hand clothes, blankets, babies powdered milk, and baked beans. What resulted was a district-wide effort for District 7780 in which 15 tons of supplies and more than $25,000 were shipped to Mwanza where a Rotary club there was coordinating relief for refugees. This wonderful presentation illustrating the power of Rotary impressed each and every one of us fortunate to be present.

As an aside, Jonathan remarked that he would love to be part of a panel discussion sometime about Ogunquit years ago and how it has retained its beauty.

As he does for each of our speakers, Dr. Joe told Jonathan that a book in his honor will be donated to Ogunquit Memorial Library. Jonathan asked if he could recommend either Salt or Cod, two books by Mark Kurlansky.
Later, Brenda and Dr. Joe, our Foundation chairs announced a donation incentive for World Polio Day, October 24. Our club will match up to $100 per person and the gates Foundation matches 2 to 1. If you donate $100 the club matches to make it $200 and the Gates matach adds $400 for a total of $600. And each member making a recurring donation of $100 will be entered into a drawing for a beautiful Brenda Cressey quilt!

In conclusion, Rick reminded us that the board will meet next Thursday at 5:00 at The Dunaway. The next club meeting is October 17.

Photos below show Mr. West addressing the club, Dr. Joe and Brenda talking about World Polio Day, and Brenda and Joe exhibiting the quilt to be raffled off to a $100 donor.
