Alice opened the meeting, her finale as president, with a meaningful message of hope originally uttered by the late Harvey Milk, who as the first openly gay member of the San Francisco board of supervisors was assassinated in 1978.
Remarking on how thankful he is for the joy and camaraderie at the changeover gathering last week, Rick referenced words of Charles Dickens, “Reflect upon your present blessings -- of which every man has many -- not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”
Focusing on the Four-Way Test question “Does it build goodwill and better friendships?”, Erin spoke of Elizabeth Ford’s many contributions to the community. Then she presented Elizabeth with a
Paul Harris award. Congratulations, Elizabeth!
Many of the members who were present donated happy dollars to thank Alice for her service as president this past year. Also thanked were Tyler for running the bread sales at BonAire! and Tracy for managing the 2 Cent Sale. Dr. Joe reported that his Norwegian granddaughter Christina returned home after a very beneficial Rotary Exchange experience. Jim Anliot was excited to be retiring. Connie regretted not being at the changeover due to a root canal procedure. Ed Smith reflected on being part of the very first 2 Cent Sale 50 years ago! Tracy reported that her niece Chloe had eloped last year. Brenda presented quilts she made to Alice and to Heath, each for their commendable service to the club as president. Pete picked up on the new Rotary theme in his latest composition,
“The Magic of Rotary is all around us now,
But there’s no trick to filling those green bags for CLYNK!
Just stay nice and hydrated, save all those bottles and cans,
It all adds up easily just as quick as a wink!”
The CLYNK account total is $1117.38.
Dr. Joe drew the 5 and 4 of spades. The elusive ace of hearts lingers somewhere in the remaining deck.
Erin asked if anyone had any questions about the 2024-25 budget proposed by the board; there were none. Brenda moved to accept the budget; Dr. Joe seconded. All present voted to approve with the exception of Carole who abstained.
Brenda provided a member talk in which she explained that the primary factor in her becoming a Rotarian was learning about Rotary’s mission to eradicate Polio. Brenda had lost a childhood friend to Polio. Her illustrious devotion to Rotary in which she rose through the ranks from club president, to district governor and ultimately becoming the first female chair of the Rotary Foundation has enriched her life immeasurably. Earlier this month she was involved in the process of having a donor increase their giving agreement to the ten million dollar level! Recently on joint projects between clubs in Panama and Los Angeles she was brought to tears in helping distribute wheelchairs to people in need.
