We enjoyed a very tasty menu treat today. I think it’s known as steak tips (I don’t normally order beef so I’m not in the know!) In any case, I thought it was quite good.
For the moment of gratitude, Eileen led off with a bit of A.A. Milne: “Piglet noticed that even though he had a Very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude.” She then personalized the message by thanking Connie for introducing her to Ogunquit Rotary. (Eileen, we are delighted that you are one of us!)
In happy dollars, Eric enjoyed a reunion of sorts in Arizona with some fellow tennis players. Tracy’s niece was married in Portland on Halloween. I’m happy that my daughter Lynn is taking Carol and me to Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth for my birthday. Susan has enjoyed a number of nice hikes with her doggie, Bella, on trails of the Great Works Land Trust. Ed Smith is pleased that his generator stood up well during a 5-hour power outage. He mentioned that two of his former mates on the fire company recently suffered the loss of their wives. Vickie Russell had a great trip to Hawaii to visit her daughter, granddaughter and two great grandchildren. Brenda is delighted with a gift Vickie brought back from Hawaii; a book called The Queen’s Quilt about a quilt made by Queen Lili’uokalani while she was imprisoned in 1895 after the failed counter-revolution.

Our guest speaker today was Nellie Young, a senior at Marshwood High School who also is the president of the Marshwood Interact Club and a member of the Kittery Rotary Club. She is working on a project to empower youth in Peru through hands-on training in cooking and entrepreneurship, helping them gain skills to find jobs, start food businesses, and support their communities. To date, eight clubs in District 7780 have contributed amounts ranging from $250 to $500. Of the overall $10,000 target, about $3,000 more is being sought. Our board will discuss the project at the December meeting this coming Monday, December 10, at 5:00 at Bangor Savings Bank.
Rick brought to our attention the plight of a number of people from Jamaica working in Ogunquit lost their homes in Hurricane Melissa. The Rotary Foundation Trustees established a new Hurricane Melissa Response Fund to support immediate relief efforts for people affected by the devastating hurricane. Rick requested a contribution from our club to the relief fund. The club approved a $250 donation.
Our annual holiday luncheon at Jonathan’s for Ogunquit seniors and Wells-Ogunquit 5th graders will be on Thursday, December 11. More info will be forthcoming.
